Congratulations to Sam Curtis
Sam Curtis made history on Saturday afternoon when the 14-year-old became the youngest player to make a senior debut in Shamrock Rovers’ storied history.
The defender set a new record for youngest senior appearance at the club replacing team-mate Kevin Zefi’s name from the history books. Curtis played as part of a backline that also consisted of a 17 year old and 18 year old.
By all accounts Curtis had a solid game as Shamrock Rovers overcame Athlone Town by three goals to one.
Reason to complain or celebrate?
Curtis appearance in senior football over the weekend has caused quite a stir in the Rep of Ireland with a number of comments appearing online branding the decision to play the schoolboy a disgrace. Some comments have suggested that this was nothing more than a PR stunt for Shamrock Rovers.
Coming under fire on social media many have questioned Shamrock Rovers duty of care for the Ireland underage international. Others have seen the move by Rovers as a great example of standards being set in their culture. Curtis can now be used as an example to other kids aspiring to play senior football. Shamrock Rovers currently have two sides operating in the League of Ireland, one in the Premier division, and a second team who Curtis appeared for on Saturday who currently play in the first division.
