Adversity Forged a Legend
His parents forced to leave their family home during the war to seek refuge in Hotel Iz in the town of Zadar. His grandfather was shot dead by militant thugs during the Croatian War when the kid was just 6 years old outside the family home they were forced to leave. Football was the escape for this kid, learning his skills with a punctured football around the hotel car park where he grew up. But even football was to test his mental resolve, the kid was rejected in his first trial at a club called Hajduk Split, the youngster deemed to be too small and weak. NK Zadar and Dinamo Zagreb would provide the environment in which his talents excelled. Today we know him as the Ballon Dor winner for being the best footballer on the planet. Congrats, Luka Modric.
