It's quickly establishing itself as one of the most prestigious youth competitions in Europe and this year the Academy Cup 2016 will welcome more new clubs to the tournament venue at Shanowen Road, home to host club St. Kevins Boys FC.
So what is the academy cup you ask. The Academy Cup is an U13 tournament organized by a Dublin, Ireland youth football club by the name of St Kevins Boys. This year marks the 8th year of the tournament which has featured no fewer than twenty different teams over the course of the previous seven years dating back to April 2009.
A tournament that has improved year upon year is set to be even bigger and better this year with six participating clubs all hoping to claim the trophy currently held by Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna, a club that is returning to defend their title this year. This year's competition see's the host club St Kevins Boys line up alongside previous participants Glasgow Celtic, West Brom and the aforementioned Deportivo La Coruna. The tournament also welcomes two new participants to this year's competition in the form of FC Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais.
This years tournament see's FC Barcelona taking part in their first ever academy tournament in the Rep of Ireland.
